En pruebas de laboratorio se encontró que este remedio natural es mejor desinfectante que los químicos del cloro.

La jamaica es conocida por sus propiedades medicinales, previene la hipertensión, alivia los síntomas de la gripe, limpia hígado y riñones, entre otros, pero ahora un científico mexicano ha encontrado que la flor de jamaica puede utilizarse para eliminar bacterias de los alimentos.

El científico de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH), Javier Castro Rosas, creó productos a base de jamaica que actúan contra bacterias dañinas resistentes y no resistentes a antibióticos para su uso en alimentos, así como en la medicina humana y veterinaria.

En entrevista con la Agencia Informativa del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Conacyt), el especialista explicó que inició el proyecto hace más de 15 años, ante la preocupación a nivel mundial de la resistencia a los antibióticos.

“Para desinfectar una lechuga es necesario poner de cuatro a cinco gotitas de desinfectante comercial a base de plata coloidal en el agua para desinfectar, o de cloro como lo recomienda la Secretaría de Salud; sin embargo, hay evidencias científicas que muestran que estos tratamientos no son eficientes”, describió.

El investigador añadió que si hay mil bacterias de la tifoidea en la lechuga, el desinfectante comercial elimina sólo entre 100 a 200; el cloro entre 400 a 500, y una simple agua de jamaica mata entre 800 a 900 bacterias.

Manifestó que aunque ésta tiene mayor efectividad que el cloro, no elimina todas las bacterias, por lo que se han desarrollado formulaciones tomando compuestos de la planta y mezclándolos con vinagre o el ácido cítrico como el jugo de limones, de tal forma que eliminan todas las bacterias patógenas de la lechuga.
