Una familia cultiva sus alimentos para todo el año en su patio trasero

Lo que empezó como una afición se convirtió en un estilo y filosofía de vida.

Jules Dervaes vive con sus hijos Anais, Justin y Jordanne en una modesta casa de Pasadena, California, no muy lejos de Los Ángeles, EE. UU.

Sin embargo, al acceder a la parte trasera de la vivienda, cambian las nociones del espacio y el tiempo, y se siente como si se estuviera en pleno campo.

La casa de los Dervaes se presenta como una hacienda de ciudad.

Kilos de comida en poco espacio

Los Dervaes producen en su propio terreno unos 2.700 kilogramos de comida al año, con una lista variada de productos: vegetales, frutas, huevos, leche, mermelada, miel, chocolate, condimentos.

“Pero esto va más allá de la comida”, dice Jules Dervaes: “Es una forma de vida, ajena al consumismo y la rapidez que caracterizan al mundo actual. Es una vuelta a los valores de nuestros antepasados”, defiende.

Además de la producción de alimentos, la familia organiza veladas de cine y música tradicional en su casa y se ofrece para cuidar a los niños del vecindario cuando lo necesiten sus padres.

Adaptación constante

Por romántica que pueda parecer su historia, lo cierto es que Jules Dervaes está nervioso y preocupado.

Son ya cuatro años sufriendo los efectos de la sequía y, a las puertas de un nuevo verano, no sabe cuánto tiempo podrán seguir adelante.

“Hemos tenido que adaptarnos e ir probando distintas estrategias”, dice.

“Hay una serie de reglas, como por ejemplo mantener un porche bonito. No se puede tener un huerto en el frente de la casa”, explica Jules Dervaes.

“Además del huerto, que es nuestro principal recurso, tenemos un jardín de flores y plantas, algunas de ellas comestibles, y también nos hemos aventurado en la producción de mermelada, miel, chocolate e incluso refrescos”, cuenta.

Si bien la familia aboga por una vuelta a las tradiciones de un pasado que concibe más saludable para cuerpo y espíritu, los Dervaes están a la vanguardia en cuanto a técnicas para ahorrar energía y, sobre todo, reducir el consumo de agua.

La sequía le quita el sueño a la familia Dervaes. Intentan mantener sistema de irrigación que no gaste demasiada agua.

Los Dervaes se adaptaron rápidamente a estas medidas y además dieron otros pasos en el ahorro de agua.

Tienen un sistema para recuperar el agua que sale de la casa y con ella regar algunos de sus árboles, y lo mismo ocurre con una ducha externa, cuya agua se emplea para el riego en lugar de desaparecer por una cañería.

Esta constante adaptación a las circunstancias es algo que caracteriza la vida de esta familia.

Nacido en Tampa, Florida, Jules Dervaes se trasladó a Nueva Zelanda en 1973 para emprender una vida rural y distanciarse de un Estados Unidos que, con sus principios económicos y con la guerra de Vietnam, lo había decepcionado.

Pero las circunstancias de la vida hicieron que Jules y los suyos regresaran a Estados Unidos, primero a Florida, donde desarrolló las habilidades de crianza de abejas aprendidas con los neozelandeses, y en 1985 a California, lugar del que ya no se ha movido.

En 1985, Jules compró la casa que ahora es su medio de vida, y a partir de 2001, conmocionado por las informaciones sobre los alimentos transgénicos, decidió cultivar su propia comida.

Desde entonces, todo ha sido un proceso de prueba y error.

“Para alcanzar el objetivo de producción que teníamos en un espacio tan pequeño”, explica Dervaes, “tuvimos que ampliar, ampliar y ampliar”.

Con su “revolución casera”, como la llaman, la familia Dervaes ha atraído mucha atención exterior.

Jules comenta que la gente ve su huerto y quiere uno igual. Llegar a tener todo esto no fue cosa de un día para otro. “Hace falta perseverancia”, dice Jules Dervaes.

“Es mejor empezar poco a poco y no rendirse ante los contratiempos”.

“Nosotros hemos tenido los nuestros, ¡lo que pasa es que de eso no hay fotografías!”, exclama. “Hay que seguir adelante, los reveses no son para siempre”.

A Jules Dervaes no le gusta hacia dónde evoluciona el hombre. En su opinión, somos cada vez más dependientes de la tecnología y lo material.

En su caso, reconoce que le resulta imposible competir con los grandes comercios y las empresas de venta por Internet.

Aun así, la familia consigue vender parte de su cosecha a pequeños restaurantes o a personas que vienen a la casa a recoger una caja llena de productos naturales.
